Automap ?
« on: January 23, 2009, 01:19:18 pm »
This is a non-binding poll. The results derermine nothing. I just
want to know how people feel about it.

For those who don't use recent versions of DS, the automap is
a little box made of ascii lines, dashes, etc, that represents your
current room and the exits available, like so:

Code: [Select]
Creators' Hall
---------
|   #   |
|   |   |
|   *--#| Also available: up.
|   |   |
|   #   |
---------

Immortals come here to communicate with each other about the world they are
building. The Builder's hall and Adventurer's Guild are north. The Arch Room
is south. The test lab facilities are east.
A sign reads: "I3 connection: ONLINE, IMC2: ONLINE"
Obvious exits: south, north, east, up
A pile of 1337 electrum, four swivel chairs, a dusty chalkboard, a wooden
chest, and a guest bed are here.
(invis) A shadow goes: nom nom nom.. is sitting down on a swivel chair.
Detah the Aura of Arcania is standing here.
A money tree is standing here.

I voted for OFF by default. However, I love the idea of the mini maps. I will be providing full documentation of the automap in my help files and letting the users decide if they want to enable it. I suspect the majority of users will turn it on. The automap status (on/off) will be listed in my detailed score screen. (which is similar to the stock ds env command).

I'd say have it on by default.  (The exception I'd make is to turn it off by default for people who selected a screen reader terminal type during account creation; don't know if that's meaningful.)  It's a newbie-friendly feature, and the kind of newbie who will be disoriented by its absence is also the kind of newbie who isn't going to dig through help to find out how to turn it on.  Signup retention rate is a significant and difficult problem, and anything that gives a leg up on it at little cost is worthwhile.
