My computer

I could use some help here, apparently, my computer doesn't want to stay on.  I tried to leave the server running, but I got disconnected from the internet because I 'didn't appear to be browsing the web at the time'.   :'-(   I need ideas on how I can fix that.  And Cratylus has already suggested getting another ISP, which is an unacceptable solution, so don't bother to mention it.

You did not mention what OS you are running on. There are several things you could try. The first is to a ping another machine



in win32

ping -t google.com

Linux

ping google.com



That would keep a connection alive. If you need to keep the link alive using http data, then you use wget ( I think there is a windows version)  and run cron job/scheduled task to retrieve information from a webpage.



I guess you could even try and get a bot to make use of a newtork related function on the mud to generate net traffic

I am using windows XP.  Apparently, there are certain 'repeater' programs you can do, like e-mail checkers, ping reqs, but I don't know how to set up timed programs, maybe someone could help me?  The problem isn't the mud server, it's the internet, I get disconnected for not browsing the web.

You could use Outlook Express - tools/options , then set send and receive messages to automatically check an email account every 5 mins.



If you want something with even more control you could try this http://www.activxperts.com/activmonitor/freeware/">prog. I have used this program at work and is great as the freeware version allows a high degree of control over icmp and http monitoring.
