I can't tell you why, but it looks like your emote is being interpreted by
the mud as a channel with a null name.

Have you messed with channels recently?

Nope, pretty stock at this point.  think I went from 2.3alpha something to the latest via the liveupgrade process.

Not sure why this would happen, but it's clear that the chat daemon is being invoked
as if you'd issued a channel emote, and since it is a null channel name, the logging
tries to append to the chan log dir rather than a channel log file. Which, thankfully, fails.

I don't have a definite answer right now, I'll put it on my front burner of things
to investigate.

Soooo I know it was not the best approach in so far as striving to find out what caused the problem, but since it was a basic stock mud just liveupdated from 2.3.13ish, I figured I would just download and walk through the install again.  This time not futzing with the mudos build scripts, as I had in the past.  Everything went well, and I can now emote again.
