Promotions / need new host for old mud :)
« on: July 11, 2009, 08:13:33 am »
Heya!

Broken World lost its host a while back and has been in coma since, sadly enough. Anyway, the administration have decided to make yet another effort. So... We have no longer any possibilities of having a free host over at our university. We are basically looking for someone who are able to host the mud in exchange for wiz/admin/whatever position. Since we are a free & profit free mud, paying for a host is not an option for us. It is an Lp with the old nanny export lib as base (totally recoded though). We got lots of nice features, for both players and wizards and they are way too many to list here. Will try below though.

The world is seamless, thought through, well themed and quite fun. One could call it apokalyptic with magik added. We have a lot of totally unique stuff when it comes to guilds, areas, races, etc. The current races are humans, mutants, robots and rubbits. Some of our guilds are Children of Gaia, Coven of the Broken Flesh, Independent Hunters, Kittens and the Desert Rangers. There are a few more and some are in the progress of coding.

As for coding... I think we are more like the muds "in the old days" rather then the new and "organized" muds. We code on the fly and use a lot of common sense of what can be added directly without approval. Players seem to enjoy this semi-chaotic ongoing beta state (which really isnt beta since we always have been fully operational).

We got a flexible and fully customised security system that allows any wizards to be in charge of access to his or hers files (read/write/exceute/etc and admins can override). We also got a time system that keeps track of days, nights, weeks, months, years, seasons, etc and ways to actually use that smoothly in the game down to detail level. And we got a property system that keeps track on any- and everything like colors, materials, terrain, holiness, etc. We got a lot of other things too. Further more we got an amazing soul, much better then the same old same old you see in most muds. With our soul… You can combine different verbs and adverbs and choose one or more targets in the room. And much more…

The possibility to advance is great, though everyone starts out at the bottom. You advance depending on your work rate. We do not require your first project to be an area, even if we would appreciate it. We do not ask that you code for hours each week, though we want you to log on at least once a week so we can see your active. If real life is busy, just post a note so we know you wont be around for a while.

We are stable (used to be anyway)... We were up for 7 years. Been at same place all the time until recently when we had to move to a crappy server that abandoned us and put us in this position.

Most importantly… We are always into new ideas, but we do try to stay in spirit of the idea of the Broken World (whatever that means ;).

Interested? Drop me a line and we can talk.

Broken World lost its host a few months ago and has been in coma since, sadly enough. Anyway, the administration have decided to make yet another effort. So... Well, we are always looking for new friends to code on the Broken Word. We are Lp with the old nanny export lib as base (totally recoded though). Open Chat / mud down
« on: February 03, 2007, 02:00:26 am »
Sigh, the mud has been down for almost 2 weeks now. Some sort of failure that they are fixing, but it isnt top priority since we dont pay anything for server or connection.

Its so typical though! I finally finish off this great skill system that I have been working on for ages. Time to finally move on to something new... And the place is not there when I come home from work.

Thank supreme being for offline coding! :) I have managed to get a lot of stuff done with offline coding. But I suck at offline coding and I find it boring, but it is at least something. :)

What also is so typical is that we had just moved, we had changed server for the first time in 7 years. Not everyone had found their way back to us. Far from everyone, maybe 5%? And so the mud dies down! Anyway, I am rambeling and I think we will be back up on monday, tuesday or whatever. It appears that all that needs to be done now is someone to go there and copy over our stuff to the new server. :)

General / FTP problems
« on: January 10, 2007, 01:21:58 am »
So... We got problems with FTP at our mud. Our FTP do work for some of us, but a lot of people have problems logging on because the code is really old and probably chokes on stuff like firewalls, routers, etc. Different sollutions work for different people, but not for everyone. What is good with our FTP is that it allows browsing through the mud depended on your access rights.

Anyway... I am thinking something like this: Put up another FTP on a different port. Is there any easy and suitable ones out there? I want something that only allows the wiz to be inside his home directory and with no options of venturing outside. :) There is no need for it really since they can read the stuff inside the mud anyway.

Ideas? Any help would be appreciated. :)

General / Players exploring
« on: January 03, 2007, 07:10:23 am »
Heya!

We are about to code up a system that logs the exploring of players. Naturally will people be able to check their status. Problem though is that I am not sure how to handle this in the best way, with regards to cpu / mem efficiancy.

This is the idea:
It counts to exploring when the player has entered the room for the first time. And it should naturally be possible to see who is top explorer etc.

But how to do this the best way?

I am pondering something like this:

Some daemon that checks a file (not pfile) if the person have been in that room (file name i suppose) and if not, the room is added to the list of explored rooms.

General / Other libs then Dead Souls?
« on: January 01, 2007, 01:22:12 am »
First I thought this was a general forum for lpmuds, but it seems like there is more or less only Dead Souls talk here (not a bad thing in itself, so dont get me wrong). So... I am curious... Is there anyone here who is running anything else?

At Broken World, we run a ldmud driver that has been modified a great deal. Our lib has almost no resemblance to the lib we started with about 7 years ago. We started out with the export nannymud lib that have been changed and modified over the years to be something entirely else (and in my opinion much better ;).
