Title: MUD documents and webpages
Post by: drakkos on August 30, 2011, 12:26:16 PM
So, one of the things I like doing is reading stuff about MUDs.  Especially LPC muds.  Shocker, I know, but hear me out.  I like historical documents, and I like stuff that people are writing about things that are going on right now.

There's a lot of stuff out there, both commonplace and relatively obscure and I think as a group we all have our own little subset of the big picture.  As such, I thought it would be frightfully keen if we could all pool our knowledge and share stuff we've written and we're writing, as well as stuff we've found on our travels that is deserving of more eyeballs than it is currently getting.

To get the ball rolling, I'll do a bit of shameless self promotion and then provide a short list some of the cooler things I've encountered in my trawls of the 'net.  I'd love to see what you guys can add to this.

Shameless self promotion first:

My MUD commentary blog - http://drakkos.co.uk/blog/blog.c?action=view&blog=mud%20commentary
The Epitaph Survival Guide - http://www.monkeys-at-keyboards.com/epitaph.pdf
LPC for Dummies (Second Edition) - http://www.monkeys-at-keyboards.com/lpc1.pdf
LPC for Dummies 2 - http://www.monkeys-at-keyboards.com/lpc2.pdf
Being a Better Creator - http://www.monkeys-at-keyboards.com/better1.pdf
Working With Others - http://www.monkeys-at-keyboards.com/working1.pdf
LPC for Dummies (First Edition) - http://discworld.atuin.net/external/lpc_for_dummies/index.shtml

And some of the better websites I've encountered in my trawls:

MUD blog aggregator - http://planet-muddev.disinterest.org
Mishmash of MUD documents - http://sourcery.dyndns.org/wiki.cgi?TheSourcery
Imaginary Realities mirror - http://imaginary-realities.disinterest.org/
Raph Koster's post on MUD-dev mailing list archives - http://www.raphkoster.com/2007/02/02/full-mud-dev-archive-for-download/
Collected Bartle Writings - http://www.mud.co.uk/richard/
Psychology of Video Games blog - http://www.psychologyofgames.com/

And a couple of researchy things:

Quests in Context: A Comparative Analysis of Discworld and World of Warcraft - http://gamestudies.org/0801/articles/karlsen
Emergent Perspectives on Multiplayer Online Games: A Study of Discworld and World of Warcraft - http://www.duo.uio.no/publ/mediekomm/2008/89153/381_Karlsen_17x24.pdf

There's a lot more, but I'm more interested in what you guys think is neat out there than I am about what I think is neat.

Regards,
Drakkos.

Regarding the full MUD-Dev link, it only goes up to 2004.  There's a more complete archive that is more viewable and downloadable here (http://www.disinterest.org/resource/MUD-Dev/). Details here (http://posted-stuff.blogspot.com/2010/02/complete-mud-dev-mailing-list-archives.html) on how it differs.  There's a "fixed" version of this new version accessible via here (http://lists.puremagic.com/pipermail/vworld-tech/2010-September/000356.html).

A local mirror of imaginary realities can also be downloaded here (http://www.disinterest.org/imaginary-realities-2011-05-14.zip).

Agora wiki (http://web.archive.org/web/20050205011246/http://agora.cubik.org/wiki/view/Main/WebHome).  Dead now.

NannyMUD LPC pdf available here also (in addition to the html link at Lysater mentioned abve):

http://ringbreak.dnd.utwente.nl/~krimud/manual.pdf (http://ringbreak.dnd.utwente.nl/~krimud/manual.pdf)

This is the KriMud website. Looks very old and may have a limited lifespan. Also has old Nightmare docs.

Thank you for resurrecting this! I also love reading about muds and their forgotten micro cultures. You can try your luck with  archive.org/web/ for incomplete snapshots of ancient websites.

Now I'm asking around for a backup of my old home mud's monthly magazine as it had over 30 issues.

I don't know if this counts but...
https://chaosgate.angband.eu/public/LPC (https://chaosgate.angband.eu/public/LPC) - my small archive of old mudlibs and drivers.
I am still keeping it for educational purposes.

I have a repository that has a slightly modified fluffos 2.27.2 that restores some old code to make it possible to run fluffos on os x and freebsd. See the commit log for more details of changes.
